Gwendolyn S. Thomas for Mayor of the Unified Government
After 28 years of service to the Unified Government, I understand the power and potential of collaboration—and I know what happens when it breaks down. Today, our governing body, Board of Commissioners are searching for a cohesive perspective, this leaves many residents feeling left behind, unheard and disconnected from their local government. As your Mayor, I will lead with purpose, not politics—bringing people together across differences to rebuild trust, renew communication, and restore accountability at every level.
The mayor’s role is not just to set the agenda, but to set the tone. I will work every day to build bridges—between Commissioners, departments, neighborhoods, and communities—because progress only happens when we work as one.
Public Health
I will partner with the State of Kansas and representatives to prioritize funding and resources for services and access to affordable health care, to support mental health services, and strengthen our relationships with clinics, care providers, and safety-net systems—because healthy communities are strong communities.
Infrastructure
From clean water to safer roads to reliable transit, I will push for smart investments that serve both our urban core and outlying communities—because no part of Wyandotte County should be overlooked.
Economic Development
I will fight for small businesses, workforce training, and strategic investment in underserved areas—because economic growth must be shared
and sustainable.
Affordable Housing
I will work closely with the Board of Commissioners to create policies/ordinances that speaks to the need for affordable housing, that includes
developers, nonprofits, and regional partners to increase access to housing that working families and individuals can actually afford—because housing is not a luxury, it’s a right.
Education & Youth Development
Mayor's Youth Taskforce
I will partner with Dr.
Anna Stubblefield, Superintendent of Schools and various school districts to see how we can work together to empower the next generation with the tools they need to
succeed.
Property Taxes & Spending
Spending: With oversight from the County Administrator and with direction from the Board of Commissioners we will launch a property tax review taskforce to pursue relief for homeowners, seniors and families.
Bi-State Partnerships
We are stronger when we think regionally. I will lead with cooperation, not competition—collaborating with leaders in Kansas City, Missouri and across the metro to bring jobs, services, and opportunities to our residents.
Internally, I will promote transparent governance, responsive public service, and a culture of inclusion and respect across every department. Externally, I will ensure residents have a seat at the table—through regular town halls, community liaisons, and open lines of communication—because good government listens.
This moment calls for a mayor who can unify, not divide. A leader who builds is the kind of leadership I offer. That’s the kind of future I’m asking us to build together.
